Ontological relations and spatial reasoning in earth science ontologies

چکیده
Several types of fundamental ontological relations connect the endurant (continuant) and perdurant (occurrent) entities in every domain. These include: instantiation, parthood, location, and connection relations, and those that are derived from them, such as adjacency, overlap, containment, and coincidence. Some of these types of relations, and their subtypes, are formally defi ned in the context of the Web Ontology Language (OWL) for a variety of endurant geological examples, mostly from the Nankai Trough in southwest Japan and the San Andreas fault in California. Here, the foundational ontological relations are discussed to show their application in building useful earth science ontologies. These relations, defi ned as properties in OWL, are given in the context of the Resource Description Framework (RDF) triples and their relationship to relational databases. The role of properties in providing semantics, reasoning, and knowledge structuring and representation is discussed for various ontological relations. The semantics of classes are provided by the metaproperty and restrictions of the properties that use these classes as domain and range. Types of properties are described from different perspectives and for different purposes. Property subclassing, through OWL’s subproperty construct, is used to restrict properties. The formal defi nitions of the foundational taxonomic (isA), partonomic (partOf), location (locatedIn), containment (containedIn, componentOf), and topologic (overlap, adjacentTo) relations, at the class and instance levels, are given in fi rst-order logic for continuant geological entities. Geologic examples for several other basic relations such as derivesFrom, transformationOf, and absorb are also given. Relations in Anatomical Ontologies ∗ Fabian Neuhaus
It is now increasingly accepted that many existing biological and medical ontologies can be improved by adopting tools and methods that bring a greater degree of logical and ontological rigor. In this chapter we will focus on the merits of a logically sound approach to ontologies from a methodological point of view. As we shall see, one crucial feature of a logically sound approach is that we h...

متن کاملOntological Blending in DOL
We introduce ontological blending as a method for combining ontologies. Compared with existing combination techniques that aim at integrating or assimilating categories and relations of thematically related ontologies, blending aims at creatively generating (new) categories and ontological definitions; this is done on the basis of input ontologies whose domains are thematically distinct but who...
متن کاملTowards a generic foundation for spatial ontology
In this paper we describe the results of our current efforts to establish a foundation for combining spatial ontologies. We draw on the state of the art in computational ontological engineering, ontologies for geographic information systems and qualitative reasoning in order to build a framework within which these, and other, approaches may be placed. The skeleton of the framework is provided b...
متن کاملALC(F): a new description logic for spatial reasoning in images
In image interpretation and computer vision, spatial relations between objects and spatial reasoning are of prime importance for recognition and interpretation tasks. Quantitative representations of spatial knowledge have been proposed in the literature. In the Artificial Intelligence community, logical formalisms such as ontologies have also been proposed for spatial knowledge representation a...
